LINUX SERVICES AND CONFIGURATION

Root

  • root is the user name or account that by default has access to all commands and files on a Linux or other Unix-like operating system. It is also referred to as the root account, root user and the superuser.
  •  Root privileges are the powers that the root account has on the system.
  • Among root's powers are the ability to modify the system in any way desired and to grant and revoke access permissions (i.e., the ability to read, modify and execute specific files and directories) for other users, including any of those that are by default reserved for root.
Web-based administration tools, in Linux systems
SAMBA
  •    Samba is the standard Windows interoperability suite of programs for Linux and Unix.
  •        Samba is Free Software licensed under the GNU General Public License, the Samba project is a member of the Software Freedom Conservancy.
  •       Samba is software that can be run on a platform other than Microsoft Windows, for example, UNIX, Linux, IBM System 390, OpenVMS, and other operating systems. Samba uses the TCP/IP protocol that is installed on the host server.

CUPS
  •        CUPS provides a portable printing layer for UNIX®-based operating systems. It has been developed by Easy Software Products to promote a standard printing solution for all UNIX vendors and users.
  •       This printing system is a freely available, portable printing layer which has become the new standard for printing in most GNU/Linux distributions.
  •   CUPS manages print jobs and queues and provides network printing using the standard Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), while offering support for a very large range of printers, from dot-matrix to laser and many in between. CUPS also supports PostScript Printer Description (PPD) and auto-detection of network printers, and features a simple web-based configuration and administration tool.
Example of CUPS

     SQUIRRELMAIL
    •       Is a standards-based webmail package written in PHP4.
    •        It includes built-in pure PHP support for the IMAP and SMTP protocols, and all pages render in pure HTML 4.0 (with no Javascript) for maximum compatibility across browsers.
    •        It has very few requirements and is very easy to configure and install.
    •        SquirrelMail has all the functionality you would want from an email client, including strong MIME support, address books, and folder manipulation.
    Example of SquirrelMail

    MAILMAN
    •      Is a server based email list and web based list member management software.
    •     It allows list users to send a single email to the list email address (i.e. list@orgname.com) and all members on the list will receive the email.
    •     It is a great communications tool for the dissemination of information and for discussion among list members.
    •    Mailman will also save list emails for archive and viewing via the web.
    •    Mailman is free software, distributed under the GNU General Public License. Mailman is written in the Python programming language, with a little bit of C code for security.
